What is the best way to describe “Punk Pop”?

To me, its the equivilant of putting a Ramones T-shirt on Hello Kitty

Maybe I’m old school but I look at the term in a whole different light since I have no clue what any of the newer bands under the classification sound like. To me the ultimate pop-punk band was The Ramones; their songs were often about alienation and rebellion yet had the catchiest hooks that allowed them to stand out against what later developed into the hardcore scene. I enjoy a whole slew of bands which later fit under the same criteria as them and I refer to as pop-punk, including The Queers, The Mr. T Experience, Screeching Weasel, and Boris The Sprinkler. I also lump The Descendents into the same term, especially their material starting at I Don’t Want To Grow Up and going on after there. Christmas Vacation, Get The Time, Silly Girl, all songs that are lumped into the punk genre yet stand apart from the stereotypical sound. Also throw in bands such as The Dickies and The Donnas into the fray.

Edit: I agree with Dan C to a T. While having really nothing to do with the punk scene, I find a few of Blink-182′s song catchy as hell. I listened a ton to both M+M’s and Wasting Time whenever I first heard them, just great simple pop songs with humorous lyrics. Damnit is another great one as well. Yeah, they don’t have anything to do with punk as far as I’m concerned but I just thought I’d throw my 2 cents in.
