How come frogs are scared of me but my tiny baby guppies aren’t?!?
It’s weird! In the summer if I go down by the pond and there are frogs about, you can see the look of FEAR in their eyes. They freeze and won’t take their eyes of me because they are terrified, and understandably so considering I’m about 1,000,000 times bigger (!)
But then, if I go to feed my baby guppies in my aquarium (and they are literally all babies now since I moved the adults on) they are completely trusting, relaxed and calm! And bear in mind these things are about the size of the tip of my fingernail!
So this doesn’t make sense! How come some things are naturally afraid or see you as a predator, yet other equally (if not more) tiny creatures aren’t worried about you at all?
adorablesuperspunkeater – Wow, how informative! Is that all you’ve managed to learn in kindergarten so far?
Its called Habituation. It is learned behaviour in animals and is acquired from experiences gained through development into an adult. The adult frogs may have already encountered humans, or at least larger creatures than itself, that have posed as a threat to them, this is why they are afraid (so they can either “fight” or “flight”).
The guppies have not yet learned of the dangers in the big wide world, therefore fear nothing, but eventually with time and experience will learn to fear everything that may be considered hostile.

Beneath Neon Star in Honky Tonk $16.70 The 27-track compilation Beneath a Neon Star in a Honky Tonk contains every song Tommy Duncan recorded for Intro Records between 1951 and 1953, as well as his lone single for Fire Records, which featured Buck Owens on guitar. The music on this disc is slightly more straightforward than conventional western swing, yet it should appeal to fans of Duncan’s classic recordings with Bob Wills, even with… |
